The valley’s most scenic living landscape
Theth is more than a trailhead: it is a rare mountain settlement where sharp limestone peaks, pasture, old stone houses and a working community meet in one view. From the church and surrounding lanes, the valley opens like a natural amphitheatre. Changing light moves across the peaks, making the same walk feel different at sunrise, late afternoon and after rain.
Start at the Church of Theth, one of the valley’s most recognisable landmarks, then continue toward the Lock-in Tower and the traditional homes scattered along the river. The architecture tells a story of snow, isolation and self-reliance. This is still a lived-in village: keep voices low, stay on public paths, ask before photographing people and do not enter yards without permission.
Theth works beautifully as part of a hut-to-hut itinerary. Leave Shkodër with only the essentials, arrange luggage storage or transfer, and use family guesthouses as your nightly anchors. The classic Valbona–Theth crossing combines a bus–ferry–bus approach through Lake Koman with a full mountain day over Valbona Pass. If you have time, stay in Theth for several nights: add Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye, Peja Pass or quieter local walks instead of rushing onward.
Bring €350–400 in cash, split between multiple secure places. Card payments and ATMs are often unavailable in the mountains, and services can be seasonal. Carry water, layers, rain protection, offline maps and a headlamp. Confirm transport, accommodation, trail conditions and weather locally; the bus–ferry–bus journey and high-pass crossing are memorable but should never be treated as fixed when conditions are poor.
